One of the most well-know threats today is a virus. There are numerous anti virus programs on the market. Some of the most common vendors are Symantic, McAfee and Grisoft. It is important that every computer on your network be protected with anti-virus software, especially the fileserver. If you have a mail server ( Exchange, Lotus notes, etc.) on your network, the anti-virus program should stop infected e-mail at the server, before it ever has a chance to enter your inbox.
This is one area that Technology Concepts has consistently addressed with every new network installation or upgrade we’ve implemented. In most implementations, we have used Symantec Anti-virus Corporate Edition (SAV) or AVG Network Edition. We highly recommend you confirm your anti-virus program is automatically downloading updated anti-virus definitions. For Symantic Anti- Virus, just double-click on the gold shield in your task tray( or run the Symantic Client Security program from the Start menu). Verify the virus definition date is within 14 days. If older than 14 days, click on the LiveUpdate button. If you receive any errors when running LiveUpdate or if your virus definitions do not update ( you must close Symantic and run it again to update the virus definition date), contact Technology Concepts for assistance. You should verify these updates once per month. AVG will automatically notify if the definitions are not up-to-date.
Many home PC users have allowed their subscription to lapse and are no longer able to retrieve virus definition updates, which is only slightly better than not having an anti-virus program at all. Our recommendation is that you install a reliable anti-virus solution on every PC that has access to the internet. In addition to the products mentioned above, there are two anti-virus programs that are free to home users ( see below). Please note that Technology Concepts has not preformed any testing on these products and we do NOT recommend them for a business environment ( also note that the license agreements do not allow for the free versions to be used in a business). For home users, however, these products are a viable alternative. |
